Johor Baru, Lahad Datu divisions poll outcome referred to Election Committee - Zahid [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno polls' outcome involving divisions in Johor Baru and Lahad Datu would be referred to the party's Election Committee.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the body would conduct investigations into the incidents in both divisions and if necessary, would be referred to the party's disciplinary board.

"The results there will be considered null and void. Therefore, the voting process will be conducted again for these two divisions," he told reporters here, tonight.

Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said most of the complaints the election committee had received were resolved or retracted.

"Only 5 per cent of the divisions faced problems.

"I am satisfied (with the voting process), but we must monitor and be fair to all candidates and delegates," he added.

The election process for the Johor Baru Umno division was postponed and suspended following allegations that there were more votes than the number of delegations present.

The decision was made by Johor Baru Umno permanent chairman Azmi Samin after being informed of the matter by the division's election committee chairman Sonawan Mad Som.

Meanwhile, fights broke out in Lahad Datu, allegedly sparked by provocations from supporters of competing candidates.
