Noh Omar to contest in Selangor state poll

SHAH ALAM: Former Selangor Umno liaison committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar has confirmed that he will contest the upcoming Selangor state election under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) ticket.

However, he did not name the party that he will join or if he will contest under PN direct membership.

Rumours of him contesting the state election have been around for some time especially as Noh is seen as a veteran and an influential figure in the Tanjung Karang parliamentary constituency.

"I am familiar with politics, I am not a spectator. I must be involved in a political contest. If the old team (Umno) where I had served for 30 year kicked me out, I can't simply be a cheerleader," said Noh when met at Majlis Ukhwah Raya here.

Using a footballer as an example, Noh said he will find a new team, because as a great player who was rejected by one team, he will move to another team.

With less than two months before the election is expected to be held, the focus is on Selangor where PN is confident they will be able to wrest control of the state from Pakatan Harapan (PH).

In the 15th General Election last year, PN, through Pas, won six parliamentary seats in Selangor while PH won 16 seats.

Noh was not nominated by Umno for the GE15 before his membership was suspended in January.

The Umno Supreme Council decided to suspend Noh for six years but the former Tanjung Karang MP asked to be fired. His request was granted by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Yesterday, it was reported that Noh's daughter Nurul Syazwani will contest a state seat in Tanjung Karang under the Bersatu ticket.

Nurul, the Tanjung Karang Srikandi Muda chief, was an Umno member before joining Bersatu after her father was fired from the party.

Noh said he understands his daughter's frustration with Umno and would not stop her from contesting the state election under PN.

"As a father, of course I would help her with the campaign if it is true that she is nominated for the election," said Noh.
