Malaysia boleh! Khairul wins 100m final, ends nation's 14-year wait for sprint gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairul Hafiz Jantan ended Malaysia's 14-year wait for a Sea Games 100m champion after winning the blue riband race at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil tonight.

The 19-year-old sprinter clocked 10.38 seconds to finish ahead of 2015 gold medallist Eric Cray (10.43s) of the Philippines and Kritsada Nasuwun of Thailand.

Khairul joins a list of Malaysian Sea Games 100m winners which include Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan (1965), G. Rajalingam (1967) and Nazmizan Muhammad (2003).

The gold medal was Malaysia's second of the day in athletics after Irfan Shamshuddin won the men's discus earlier.
