SETIU: A herd of six elephants destroyed a banana smallholdings owned by a villager in Kampung Pelong early this morning.
The pachyderm destroyed more than 30 banana plants, some fruiting and ready for harvest in the 0.8 ha plot.
The victim, Yahya Mat Zin, 58, said the plants were completely destroyed and there was nothing he could do to stop the rampage.
Following the incident, villagers rushed to their respective farms nearby to burn old tyres as a measure to stop the elephants.
They also alerted the National Parks and Wildlife Department who arrived today to track the animals.
"We have been told by the rangers that the herd had moved into the Bukit Kesing forest reserve but we will keep vigilant tonight.
"From past experiences, the elephants will return to forage for food, especially in farms cultivated with bananas and other fruit trees, including young oil palms," he added.
