Former IGP Musa courts controversy again with tweets seemingly blaming victims of domestic abuse

KUALA LUMPUR: Former inspector-general of police Tan Sri Musa Hassan has again courted controversy.

In a Twitter thread which began yesterday, Musa talked about what a wife should avoid doing and quoted a surah.

The tweet on his Twitter handle @TSMusaHassan advised wives not to practise several habits to prevent domestic violence from happening.

"Do not insult and curse your husband in the presence of others.

"Do not raise your voice and scold your husband.

"Do not leave the house without asking for your husband's permission.

"Do not curse misfortune on your husband.

"Do not show hate on what your husband desires.

"Do not become the cause of stress to your husband," read the tweet.

The 72-year-old then posted another tweet which said "A wife who disobeys her husband, her place is in Hell."

He said that according to the Surah AnNisa', a pious woman is one who obeys God and her husband.

"Pious women are those who preserve (their honour and whatever must be preserved) when her husband is not present with her, with God's protection and His help.

"The women whom you are concerned about committing acts of disobedience (nusyuz) should be advised.

He also said that if the women are stubborn, they should be boycotted in the bedroom.

"And (if they are still stubborn), beat them (with a light blow intended to teach)."

However, he also posted that if the women are obedient towards their husband, the husband should not look for ways to trouble them.

The posts caused consternation among his followers and other Malaysian netizens who feared Musa was advocating victim blaming.

They also implied that Musa should also then talk about the wrongs that husband do.

The posts come in the wake of the release of a video clip in which a man who looks like Musa is seen arguing with a woman believed to be the man's wife and possibly assaulting her.

Yesterday, the former top cop had tweeted a reply to netizens who had questioned him about the video clip, telling them not to interfere with his family's affairs.
