The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are open to the idea of a "cluster format" for the 2021 season if it means getting badminton back on track.
This is the national body's response to the Badminton World Federation (BWF)'s suggestion on organising cluster format tournaments for Tokyo Olympics qualification.
The BWF are already laying down the groundwork for a cluster format season with two Asian legs of the tour, as well as the World Tour Finals, to be played in Bangkok in January.
"I think based on what BWF had suggested, we are quite acceptable to that idea," said BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh yesterday.
"With the situation as it is now, travel between countries is only going to get more complicated.
"And if countries continue to practise mandatory quarantine upon visitors' arrival, it would make back-to-back tournaments between two countries not a feasible option.
"Of course this means Malaysia, too, although we still do not know if we'll be under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) by next year.
"What's important, however, is that we can find a way to get badminton started once again without compromising the health and safety of all players."
Kenny, however, said they need more information from BWF before they could dive into deeper details.
"While this concept is good, I believe we still need more information from BWF before we can make our plans for next year," said Kenny.
"But if it helps with travel restrictions for the players, then we are very open to it."
A major consideration for BAM could be organising both the Malaysian Masters and the Malaysian Open as back-to-back tournaments.
The Malaysian Masters is a Super 500 tournament usually held in January while the Malaysian Open is a Super 750 tournament usually organised during the April and May period.
This year's Malaysian Open has been cancelled with the Denmark Open from Oct 13-18 set to be the only remaining tournament for the 2020 calendar.
