Rexy challenges Wei Cong - Kai Wun

BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky has thrown down the gauntlet to men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun to make strides in major World Tour events, starting with the Denmark Open, which starts on Tuesday.

The world No 22 will open their campaign in Odense against All England champions Shobihul Fikri-Bagas Maulana of Indonesia at the Super 750 event.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun are among the country's best-performing men's pairs this season after having captured the India Open Super 500 in January and the Taiwan Open Super 300 in July.

But their record in Super 750 tournaments or higher is still unimpressive. They were first-round casualties at the All England (Super 1000), Malaysia Open and Japan Open (both Super 750) this year.

"I hope to see Wei Chong-Kai Wun go far in the coming European legs," said Rexy.

"Both the Denmark and French Opens are high-tier tournaments. The further they go, it will be more rewarding for them.

"Wei Chong-Kai Wun are progressing as a pair and are ranked close to the top-20 bracket. I believe they can do better.

The Denmark Open offers Wei Chong-Kai Wun a chance to avenge their defeat to world No 14 Shobihul-Bagas at the Belgian International last year. The Malaysians lost 21-10, 21-18 to the Indonesian pair.

Shobihul-Bagas, despite their All England breakthrough, have been struggling to impress of late. They failed to get past the last-16 stage in their last seven World Tour events.

The other four Malaysian pairs in the fray are world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong.

Goh V Shem-Wee Kiong were the last Malaysian men's pair to win at the Denmark Open — achieved in 2016.
