Pocket Rocketman in seventh heaven after reclaiming Asian sprint crown

NILAI: Cyclist Azizulhasni Awang regained his status as the continent's sprint king after emerging victorious in the Asian Track Cycling Championships at National Velodrome, here, today.

The 35-year-old, who had won the sprint title six times — in 2008, 2009, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2020, defeated Jakarta Nations Cup silver medallist Kaiya Ota of Japan 2-0 (9.924s, 9.828s) in the men's elite sprint final for a record 11th gold medal overall in the championships.

In the semi-finals, the Pocket Rocketman knocked out defending champion Kento Yamasaki of Japan 2-0.

After a day's rest, Azizulhasni will begin his quest for his first Asian keirin title in eight years, having last triumphed in his pet event at the 2015 edition in Thailand.

A victory on Sunday will see him repeat his two-gold feat in sprint and keirin achieved at the 2008 edition in Japan, where he also claimed the team sprint silver medal.

"Overall, I'm happy to set a legacy, but it is not done yet. my work is not complete yet. I have the keirin on Sunday and a chance to win my 12th Asian title," said a jubilant Azizul after the race.

"I will not take the keirin lightly. Coach John Beasly has a plan and we will see how it goes."
