KUALA LUMPUR: Being an official MotoGP test it was no surprise to see plenty of new technology and even some old faithfuls in action at Sepang Circuit despite the uncooperative weather over the last three days.
Testing new aero kit was the order of the day for most manufacturers as they looked for incremental improvements in performance.
Defending champion Francesco Bagnaia was spotted with an updated aero fairing on both his bikes which Ducati Lenovo teammate Enea Bastianini was also equipped with. The latter, however, was focusing more on testing engine specifications.
Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing) tried out a variation of the new aero wings he used earlier this week, the difference between the two being the addition of a third element underneath.
Monster Energy Yamaha duo Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli also tried new aero packages.
The former tested new downwash ducts while Morbidelli was seen going back to some older aero parts, testing them back-to-back with the newer version.
The duo were also testing two different engine specifications which they will have to decide on before the new season begins.
Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez had plenty to try out with four RC213Vs on his side of the garage.
One was a 2022 bike he used to get up to speed in the early sessions while two were 2023 development bikes which both had different chassis.
The most interesting among the lot was an experimental bike which appeared to use aero kit from 2021 and swingarm from 2018.
Outright pace was not the only goal at the test with many teams also working on their long runs as well as their race pace for the new Saturday sprint race format which is being introduced this season.
Rain on the second day and late in the final day today did make it more challenging for the teams.
Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) topped the final session today with a one minute and 57.889 second effort. Bagnaia (+0.080s) was a close second while Vinales (+0.147s) was third.
