Double-gold delight for Malaysian squash

MALAYSIA continued their dominance in squash after bagging both gold medals in the men’s and women’s singles events at the Philippines Sea Games yesterday.

The women’s final was an all-Malaysian affair between Chan Yiwen and Rachel Arnold at the Manila Polo Club.

Rachel’s experience allowed her to grind out an 11-9, 11-7, 11-3 win to secure her second Sea Games singles gold after winning in 2015 and also make up for losing to S. Sivasangari in the 2017 final in Kuala Lumpur.

‘I felt confident going in today (yesterday). I thought my performance was quite solid,’ said Rachel.

‘I struggled at times when I kept making a few mistakes in a row. I’m glad I managed to keep cool and get the gold.’

Addeen Idrakie Bahtiar, who finished runner-up to teammate Sanjay Singh Chal in the 2015 Singapore final, emerged victorious with a hard-earned 11-7, 3-11, 11-9, 11-5 win over Philippines’ Robert Garcia in the men’s decider. Darren Rahul Pragasam , who lost to Robert in the semi-finals on Monday, clinched bronze.
