Rachel cruises past Egyptian to reach last eight in New York

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 18 Rachel Arnold powered into the quarter-finals of the Carol Weymuller Open in New York on Thursday.

The fifth seed made quick work of world No. 32 Hana Ramadan, winning 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 in just 26 minutes.

It was Rachel's second victory over the Egyptian in five encounters.

The 28-year-old Malaysian will take on world No. 14 Farida Mohamed of Egypt later on Thursday for a place in the semi-finals.

Farida was pushed to five games by Hong Kong's Lee Ka Yi before sealing an 11-4, 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3 win in 37 minutes.

Rachel holds a perfect record against Farida, winning all four of their previous meetings.

Meanwhile, two-time national champion and world No. 31 Aira Azman saw her campaign come to an end after suffering an 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 defeat to world No. 19 Melissa Alves of France in just 21 minutes.
