KUALA LUMPUR: Gaming giants Todak are likely to shutter their Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Malaysia (MPLMY) team at the end of Season 15.
Vice president of Todak Gaming Roslan Rashid said they are looking to focus more on a sponsorship role moving forward in a bid to boost their market share.
Todak are three-time MPLMY champions. MPLMY Season 15 is expected to start in March.
"We are pivoting because we have seen that the market for us to garner returns is broader if we become sponsors (instead of team owners)," he said recently.
"For example, we can sponsor teams that were rivals to us previously and can acquire their fans, subsequently they could support our products.
"We can also sponsor events like MPLMY or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile Spring League, increasing the market reach of our products."
Todak is a large corporate entity which produces lifestyle products, gaming peripherals, educational material, apparel and in-game digital currency.
Todak also have teams competing in PUBG Mobile and Valorant. They also recently announced an eFootball roster led by FIFAe World Cup Champion Ahmad Muhaimin "Minbappe" Abd Razak.
Their impending exit from MLBB will be a huge blow to the local scene. Multiple teams have shut down in recent years.
The latest is RSG, which disbanded all of their MLBB rosters in The Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore last month.
The Singapore-based organisation's Malaysian division were MPLMY Season seven champions in 2021 and were winners of the Kohai Sea Championship in 2023 (season two).
