Protesters pelt Malaysian embassy with eggs over fatal shooting of Indonesian

JAKARTA: Nearly 100 protesters from various human rights groups and trade unions gathered and threw eggs at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta yesterday.

Members of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) and the Labour Party were among those who threw eggs at the front wall of the embassy.

The protest was in response to a shooting incident involving Indonesian nationals in the waters off Tanjung Rhu, near Banting, which resulted in one death and four injuries.

Protesters also carried banners that read, "Arrest and imprison the Malaysian police who shot dead the Indonesian migrant worker."

Meanwhile, Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Jan 25 said the shooting occurred when five Indonesian nationals were attempting to leave Malaysia illegally.

The ministry then demanded a thorough investigation, particularly into the possible excessive use of force by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Indonesian authorities in Riau province reported on Wednesday that they received the body of the deceased Indonesian national, identified as Basri, 50, and had transported it back to his village in Pulau Rupat, Bengkalis.
