THE dumping of rubbish into Sungai Perlis has irked residents in Jalan Sarawak, Kuala Perlis, Kangar.
Despite action by the Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), the river, near a fish landing jetty and homes, continues to be polluted with bottles and plastic.
A resident, Izani Kassim, 54, said he was concerned the rubbish would reduce the fish population and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“I understand the village is crowded and the houses are located close to one another, hence, there are no places to burn or bury the rubbish.
“However, there are other ways to dispose of rubbish rather than dumping it into the river at the back of their home.
“I take out the garbage three times a week and throw it into a large bin a few kilometres away.”
ACTIONLINE:
Perlis SWCorp director Mohd Hidy Md Zahir said besides providing large bins in the area three years ago, it had also conducted programmes to encourage people to keep the area clean.
However, despite the efforts, including having gotong-royong, he said he was disappointed to see the problem continue.
He said there were plans to carry out more programmes to educate residents about proper waste disposal methods.
