Abandoned vehicles poser

Abandoned vehicles in Bandar Baru Klang are nothing but an eyesore.

A resident, who declined to be named, said the vehicles, including vans and a lorry, had been abandoned for months along Jalan Serindit 17 and Persiaran Bukit Raja.

“These vehicles, some missing tyres and parts, take up parking spaces and pose a danger to residents. They can collect rainwater and become mosquito breeding grounds. We have had dengue cases,” the resident told Actionline yesterday.

He said he hoped the authorities would take action.

The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) said it would send a team to investigate.

However, its corporate communications director, Nofiza Mahfiz, said MPK could not simply tow away abandoned vehicles.

She told Actionline that MPK must act in accordance with the standard operating procedure.

“It is not easy to tow away vehicles. If it is a stolen vehicle, MPK cannot immediately act on it. Its owner should go to the Road Transport Department to cancel the vehicle registration number to facilitate its disposal.”

“Some owners might have died and some might have changed ownership but did not register with RTD.

“This makes it difficult for the authorities to act.”

Norfiza said MPK had towed away 146 abandoned vehicles from January to last month.

“There are 345 vehicles in our depot waiting to be discarded.”

Norfiza said through MPK Care, the council’s latest programme, measures were being formulated to solve the issue.
