RAWANG: Scomi Engineering Bhd aims to deliver the first five-car monorail to Brazil's Line 17 project by the third quarter of this year.
Its chief executive officer Rohaida Ali Badaruddin said it will take two months for the train to arrive in Sao Paulo and the company has to be sure the civil works in the city is ready to receive the monorail.
"For now, the stations and the depots are not completed.
"We hope that by the time we finish conducting all the necessary testing of the first train and the delivery, the civil works there will be completed," she told reporters at its manufacturing plant in Sg Choh, here today.
The Line 17 contract entails a total of 14 five-car monorail train sets, out of which eight will be manufactured in Malaysia while four will be done in Sao Paulo.
Scomi tested its first five-car monorail at its manufacturing plant in Sg Choh for design validation, and will carry out more tests before delivered to Brazil.
The testing event was also witnessed by the Ambassador of Brazil to Malaysia Carlos Martins Ceglia together with members from the embassy and Scomi management team.
The first of its kind Brazil monorail, which comes fitted with driverless system, can accommodate 36,000 passenger-per-hour-per-direction (PPHPD) as compared to the KL Monorail that can accommodate just over 20,000 PPHPD.
"The capacity for the Brazil monorail is now almost the same as the light rail transit (LRT)," Rohaida said.
Scomi won the Line 17 monorail contract back in 2013 for RM173 million, which is target to be completed by 2019.
The company was also awarded additional scope of work amounting RM613.2 million for the project.
In addition, Scomi has also won the contract for the Line 18 Sao Paulo monorail project via a public-private partnership with VEM ABC SA.
