KUALA LUMPUR: The national research and development (R&D) centre in information and communications technology (ICT) MIMOS and telecommunications equipment and services company Huawei Malaysia have joined forces in addressing regional public safety and smart city issues.
MIMOS and Huawei will cooperate in identifying opportunities related to public safety and smart city projects in Malaysia in particular and the Asia Pacific region in general.
Both parties will also hold discussions and exchange information in order to jointly develop solutions using MIMOS’ Open Innovation Platform and Huawei’s OpenLab.
This was stipulated in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between both parties at the Huawei Connect 2017 event in Shanghai, China last month, followed by a document exchange ceremony here on Oct 13 on the sidelines of the National Innovation and Creative Economy (NICE) Expo 2017, organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
In a statement, MIMOS chief executive officer Ahmad Rizan Ibrahim said the use of innovative technology solutions to address public safety had become more necessary as cities grew in size and complexity.
“It is important that these solutions help citizens and authorities to detect, mitigate and prevent safety issues,” he said.
He said MIMOS was working towards investing in smart initiatives especially when it came to public safety that would help push the region forward.
Earlier this month, MIMOS signed an MoU with the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) to collaborate in developing smart city solutions for Kulai and Sedenak in the Iskandar Malaysia corridor. The R&D centre is also managing MOSTI’s smart community projects in Pekan, Tuaran and Kiulu.
MIMOS’ current work on public safety also includes the SMART Lokap system for Royal Malaysia Police, and the Licence Plate Recognition System.
Huawei Malaysia chief executive officer Abraham Liu Kang said: “We look forward to strengthening our partnership with MIMOS by introducing new and more Huawei technologies and sharing best practices in an effort to jointly develop innovative smart city solutions.
“The implementation of newer tools would improve public services in crime-fighting, reducing response time to emergencies and enhancing overall public perception.” - BERNAMA
