KUALA LUMPUR: While expressing disappointment over Tan Sri Hamidin Amin's decision to step down as FA of Malaysia (FAM) president, Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is concerned about the ongoing projects.
Speaking after the National Women's League final at Merdeka Stadium on Saturday night, Yeoh acknowledged Hamidin's contributions, particularly the establishment of the National Training Centre (NTC), and she hopes that his successor would ensure continuity.
"I was quite disappointed with Hamidin's announcement. He has introduced a lot of initiatives, such as the NTC, and many of these projects are at a crucial halfway point.
"It's up to FAM to find a capable leader, but I want to ensure that these efforts aren't disrupted by the change in leadership," she said.
Yeoh stressed the importance of completing these projects on schedule and that the focus should be on the deliverables.
She also praised Johor Darul Ta'zim FC owner, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ) for his recent work in Doha, which has put Malaysian football in the global spotlight. He had discussions with FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, Qatar sports minister Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Ahmed Al Thani and Paris Saint-Germain FC president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as well as with football legends like Andrea Pirlo and Roberto Carlos.
"I think it's fantastic that TMJ continues to elevate Malaysia's presence on the international stage, especially in football.
"Everyone is excited about the new plans for 2025. The government has provided funds and support, but we also expect to see performance improvements and key performance indicators being met," said Yeoh.
She also commented on the altercation between Malaysia and Singapore football fans at the Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT station following an Asean Cup match on Friday.
"We cannot accept or condone such behaviour.
"The Safe Sports Code isn't just for athletes and coaches, it applies to fans as well. Win or lose, respect must prevail. These public facilities are government assets, funded by taxpayers, and such actions are irresponsible," said Yeoh.
She lauded Prasarana for extending train operations to accommodate fans, and urged supporters to show gratitude by behaving respectfully.
On Saturday, Kelana United claimed the National Women's League title after a 2-2 draw against 10-woman Sabah. Kelana finished tops with 37 points from 14 games and runner-ups Sabah collected 31 points. Kelana won RM80,000 while Sabah earned RM50,000.
