KUALA LUMPUR: Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd (BHIC) has appointed Vice Admiral (Retired) Datuk Syed Zahiruddin Putra Syed Osman, 60, as an independent and non-executive director.

In its filing to Bursa Malaysia today, BHIC said the appointment took effect from August 21, 2019. The size of BHIC’s board will expand to 10 members, with this latest change.

Earlier in July 2019, BHIC had appointed six new directors to its Board. They are Tan Sri Ramlan Mohamed Ali, Datuk Maznah Abdul Jalil, Fahmy Ismail, Tan Sri Aziah Ali, Dr Salihin Abang and Saadatul Nafisah Bashir Ahmad.

Syed Zahiruddin joined the Royal Malaysian Navy on September 8, 1977 and was trained as a Midshipman at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in the United Kingdom in 1978.

He commissioned as Sub-Lieutenant on December 31, 1979. And last post with the Malaysian Armed Forces was the Joint Force Commander before officially retiring on July 27, 2019.

During his long and illustrious career in the navy, Syed Zahiruddin honed his skills in human resource management, training, operations, as well as strategic planning and development.

He holds a Masters in Human Resource Management from University of New South Wales, Australia and a Diploma in Executive Business Management from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

BHIC non-executive chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor said, “the board of directors and senior management team look forward to benefitting from Syed Zahiruddin’s vast experience as we navigate through our next chapter of growth.”

Ahmad Ramli is the former managing director of BHIC. He was redesignated to lead the board in April 2019 after Tan Sri Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin stepped down in November 2018.
