MAHB passengers traffic declines 84pct in November

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) network of airports recorded 1.8 million passengers in November 2020, a decline of 84.2 per cent over November 2019.

In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, MAHB said domestic and international passenger movements recorded 1.3 million and 500,000 passengers with a decline of 78.3 per cent and 90.6 per cent respectively compared to the same period in 2019.

On a last 12-month basis, the total MAHB network of airports declined by 61.9 per cent with 53.6 million passengers.

MAHB said overall aircraft movements declined by 73.2 per cent over November 2019.

Domestic and international aircraft movements contracted by 68.3 per cent and 80.8 per cent respectively.

MAHB said Malaysia's November traffic performance, particularly for the domestic sector, was impacted by the extension of conditional Movement Control Order (MCO)from October to December 6, 2020 that was also extended to almost all states in Peninsular Malaysia.

"Nevertheless, KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Aiport) welcomed the return of Cathay Pacific Airways with one flight weekly, after a three-year absence.

In total, there were 58 scheduled and charter airlines operating at KLIA to 64 international destinations in 35 countries, including cargo flights to 21 countries in November.

"Also in November, Malaysia Airports' commitment in ensuring the hygiene and safety of passengers and the airport community amid  Covid-19 has been recognised internationally with the recent validation by the British Standards Institution (BSI)," it said.

Meanwhile in Turkey, MAHB-owned Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SGIA) in Istanbul saw passenger movements slightly affected by the re-introduction of partial curfews on November 20, a measure imposed by the Turkish government due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases across the country.

Compared to November 2019, Istanbul SGIA had recorded 61 per cent and 39 per cent of domestic and international passenger movements.
