KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (Mitec) has reopened its facilities in conjunction with the reopening of the business events sector, which contributed RM9.2 billion to the national economy in 2019.
The opening of the business events sector bodes well for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and Malaysian businesses in general, said Mitec acting chief executive officer Mala Dorasamy.
Mitec, according to Mala, had aided in the strengthening of SMEs as well as the creation of jobs.
"We have generated more than 841,000 gig worker labour hours and created jobs for over 100,000 people since our inception," she said.
Mala described the facility as a game-changer in the country's business events market and a catalyst for the mega development of KL Metropolis.
"As Mitec entered the global market space, we have seen the increase of local and international event organisers hosting their business events in Malaysia. MItec has been the game-changer in the nation's resilient business events industry, and we are committed to helping catalyse the local business recovery and reform," she said.
Mitec has played host to some of the world's most significant events, including the SEA Games 2017, Defense Services Asia Exhibition and Conference 2018, Global Halal Summit 2019, SEMICON Southeast Asia 2019, ASEAN Super 8, POWERGen Asia 2019, Malaysian International Furniture Fair, Malaysia International Water Convention 2019, Malaysia International Halal Showcase 2019 and TCE Baby Expo 2020.
Mitec is looking forward to welcoming all conferences and exhibitions back.
She said it was positioned in an enhanced transformation mode and the gateway to Southeast Asia, encompassing a vision to serve the local and international business events market.
Being considered as a successful international exhibition site, the centre was effectively developing in the direction of becoming a worldwide multifunctional trade, convention, exhibition, and events centre, she said.
Mitec has partnered with the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau for the 'Let's Meet tomorrow' and 'Let's Meet Locally' campaigns to stimulate the domestic business events industry and encourage new events in Malaysia.
"It is crucial now for all to work together to catalyse the growth and innovation of the industry. With the relaxation of domestic travel, 50 per cent capacity currently permitted and introduction of travel bubbles, Malaysia is indeed on the road to recovery", she said.
