KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has selected Maxis Bhd as its partner to deploy a 5G use case comprising multiple converged solutions to power up its Tanjung Malim plant with network installations beginning October.
The partnership is part of Proton's growth strategy in developing Proton City as a model smart city through the latest tools and systems and Maxis' commitment to delivering 5G solutions for enterprises.
The solutions include smart security systems to track and ensure the security of cars that roll off the production line and an augmented reality/virtual reality remote support and maintenance system that enables Proton engineers to communicate with their international partners in real-time.
Proton chief executive officer Li Chunrong said that as the nation's premier automotive brand, Proton continues to look into emerging technologies to advance its expertise and deliver value to its customers.
Li said implementing 5G tech at its main plant is an essential step in its growth strategy.
"Through this strategic partnership with Maxis, we look forward to unlocking opportunities that can translate into enhanced security, a safer environment, improved efficiencies, and ultimately, build better quality cars," he said.
Meanwhile, Maxis chief executive officer Gokhan Ogut said this partnership with Proton for proof of concept is a testament to the company's key role that it has been playing in fostering a digital ecosystem for industries through innovation.
"As Malaysia's leading converged solutions provider, Maxis offers 5G innovation through our expertise and resources," said Ogut.
The use case will rely on a purpose-built 5G network, and Maxis will manage the end-to-end services for several IoT solutions at Proton's manufacturing headquarters in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
According to Proton, the eventual introduction of 5G technology can revolutionise the automotive industry and transform the transportation sector.
In the journey towards creating a smart Proton City, innovation run on 5G technology will eventually fulfil the carmaker's vision of building its smart manufacturing campus.
"5G will also allow Proton to extend its research and development in cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology, which will allow the carmaker to design and build robust future-proof autonomous vehicles," it added.
