Maxis, UTAR explore deploying 5G solutions in healthcare, education

KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis Bhd has partnered with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to explore commercial opportunities for deploying 5G solutions in the healthcare and education fields.

Maxis said joint solutions such as on cybersecurity, green technology and smart campus initiatives may also be developed leveraging the telco's network infrastructure.

In the healthcare field, potential 5G-enabled solutions may include remote surgery (telesurgery), advanced telemedicine, remote consultations and real-time health monitoring.

As for education, solutions may be developed to facilitate and enhance the learning experience through immersive environments and interactive content delivery.

According to Maxis, the 5G-enabled augmented reality (AR) applications can enable remote access and participation in lectures while enriching the learning experience through multimedia content integrated into real-world environments.

Maxis chief enterprise business officer Prateek Pashine said healthcare and education are critical fields that require future-ready ideas, and industry-academia collaborations such as this will help to accelerate innovation.

UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat said the partnership aligns with its commitment to fostering research and innovation that addresses critical needs in healthcare and education.

"By leveraging the combined strengths of academia and industry, we can co-create transformative solutions that contribute to technological advancements and societal progress," he said.

Previously, UTAR selected Maxis in 2019 to provide two of its campuses at Sungai Long and Kampar with high-speed Internet services.

Each of the campuses were equipped with Maxis' connectivity solutions that would also enable UTAR to scale up their bandwidth seamlessly to much higher speeds.
