Sunway set plans to launch tertiary medical centre, shopping mall in Ipoh by 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Group has set plans to launch a tertiary medical centre and a shopping mall in the 1,350-acre integrated township of Sunway City Ipoh by 2025.

The RM350 million medical centre with 200 beds will open in 2024 and cater to the city's growing population.

This will increase the demand for tertiary medical care through a comprehensive cancer centre and a focus on women's health and wellness lifestyle medicine.

"Leveraging Sunway City Ipoh's ecosystem as an integrated resort township, Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh's strategic location would also propel the city's status as a medical tourism hub," it said.

Meanwhile, Sunway said a shopping mall with a net lettable area of 700,000 square feet and 2,700 parking bays is also in the pipeline.

This development will blend Tambun's natural setting while introducing the best retail experience into the heart of Perak.

"The mall will further complement the existing developments in Sunway City Ipoh with a retail component that features international brands and food and beverages (F&B) outlets.

"The RM2 billion investment will benefit not just the local community and visitors to Sunway City Ipoh, but will also cater to the growing needs of the entire Eastern Development Corridor of Ipoh, serve as a major catalyst of growth in the city, and a substantial contributor to the state's overall economic vibrancy," it said.

Sunway today marked the ground-breaking ceremony to expand Jalan Tambun to ease traffic congestion and increase accessibility to the Eastern Development Corridor of Ipoh.

The company said this RM16 million upgrading works is the latest in a series of collaborations jointly undertaken by Sunway and the Perak state government since early 2000 to spur the city's economy.

Founder and chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said Perak's biggest export is neither pomelo nor white coffee, but human talent.

Cheah hopes that by providing a thriving ecosystem through an integrated township like Sunway City Ipoh, the company can start reversing this trend and attract the best and brightest to make Ipoh their home.

"Before the pandemic, up to two million motorists would traverse the North-South Expressway during festive periods.

"We aim to attract travellers who use the highway to stop by Sunway City Ipoh and enjoy the amenities and facilities Sunway has to offer," he added.
