Firefly takes off first flight powered by renewable aviation fuel

KUALA LUMPUR: Firefly Sdn Bhd today operated its first flight powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The initiative is part of Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) sustainability plan to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The flight is the first domestic passenger flight powered by SAF, with a SAF refuelling showcase highlighted during the Selangor Aviation Show 2022 in SkyPark RAC Subang today.

Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Firefly are the official airline partners for this three-day event.

FY1436 departed from Subang to Penang with an ATR72-500 aircraft using 38 per cent SAF blended fuel.

MAG group chief sustainability officer and Firefly chief executive officer Philip See Yew Jin said that since Malaysia Airlines launched its first passenger flight to Singapore using SAF in June this year, Firefly is gearing up to launch the first Malaysian domestic flight powered by SAF.

"The use of SAF will be one of Firefly's most significant contributions to a cleaner and tenable tomorrow, which fittingly attests to Firefly's commitment to green and sustainable innovations, in line with the 2022 World Tourism Day theme of 'Rethinking Tourism'," he said in a statement today.

Petronas Dagangan Bhd chief operating officer said the company is very excited about the opportunity to supply SAF to Firefly.

"We will continue to explore opportunities for advancing SAF together with our partners, to jointly accelerate the transformation of the Malaysian aviation industry into a sustainable one," he said.

The Selangor Aviation Show is a business aviation event held from September 8 to September 10, 2022.

It will bring together local and overseas industry experts, thus providing an avenue for networking, business opportunities, and coverage of various regional prospects.
