Petra looking to work with Education Ministry to educate on energy conservation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) Ministry is looking to work with the Education Ministry to educate the younger generation on energy conservation via the Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme (MELP).

MELP is a joint initiative by the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia, Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, MyPower, Yayasan Hijau Malaysia and other relevant agencies.

The programme highlights the importance of energy and ignites awareness on energy conservation among consumers. Petra Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said MELP also focuses on educating the younger generation on energy-related issues.

"On a bigger scale, we plan to have further discussions with the Education Ministry to see ways that we can help in facilitating the understanding of energy conservation among young people. "However, we are aware that the Education Ministry has other initiatives that they need to implement so we will find other approaches to create awareness. Among them are school trips to the National Science Centre," he told reporters at the launch of Green Guardian Centre here today.

Under MELP, TNB and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia were able to have an energy-focused platform dubbed as the Green Guardian Centre at the National Science Centre.

The Green Guardian Centre has various audiovisual and educational materials that suit the younger generation.

The presentation of the materials enables students to easily understand the subject matter.

Akmal said a wider understanding of energy transition is critical in ensuring that energy transformation is fair and inclusive.

"Therefore, it is the responsibility of the government and industry players to provide explanation and awareness to the people so that they are ready to face energy transition and its impact on individuals and society," he added.

TNB Global Business Solutions chief officer Datuk Ahmad Hushairi Ibrahim said TNB has implemented a total of 46 programmes in the past year that involved government agencies, consumer associations, contractors as well as students, and received positive feedback.

"Based on surveys, the results found that consumers are more aware of energy conservation and this is in line with the government's aspirations of being a carbon neutral nation by 2050. "TNB is putting in effort to expedite the energy transition process by setting a target of 35 per cent reduction in carbon emission and 50 per cent coal generation capacity by 2035," he added. -end-
