KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile and EDOTCO Group will speed up the deployment of the 5G network under the government's dual network model.
The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the endeavour.
According to the agreement, EDOTCO will provide U Mobile with information and access to its tower infrastructure, resources readiness and expedited site delivery to aid in U Mobile's 5G rollout.
Additionally, U Mobile and EDOTCO will collaborate to develop a streamlined process for efficiently identifying suitable tower locations and structures using artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven analytics, as well as working with various state agencies for quicker and more efficient site acquisition and permissions.
"This will enable faster on-air time for new 5G sites and expedite coverage expansion.
"Additionally, the two parties will discuss commercial arrangements for various infrastructure requirements, including built-to-suit sites, co-locations, site upgrades and indoor coverage with the goal of establishing a cost-efficient and competitive offering to enable timely rollout," it added.
U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the collaboration aligns with the government's mandate for dual 5G networks, aiming to foster healthy competition in the telecommunications sector.
"We are committed to ensuring enhanced connectivity across the nation and positioning Malaysia as the leader in 5G within Asean.
"As the nation's largest tower company, we are dedicated to working with mobile network operators (MNOs) to deliver superior telecommunications solutions and shape the future of connectivity in the region," said EDOTCO director of Malaysia business Gayan Koralage.
Recently, U Mobile extended its lease contract with EDOTCO for another term and is working on a site consolidation plan.
This plan aims to improve aesthetics and reduce network operation costs, thereby advancing the deployment of 5G using existing infrastructure.
