Bursa Malaysia opens higher on renewed hopes for US rate cut

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened higher on Thursday amidst bullish global risk appetite after Wall Street hit another record high.

At the start of trading, the FBM KLCI was up 2.78 points to 1,621.16 from Tuesday's close of 1,618.38.

Turnover was at 661.524 million shares valued at RM330.105 million.

Gainers led losers 559 to 227 in the broader market, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice president Thong Pak Leng said traders remain optimistic that the Federal Reserve will adjust rates in September ahead of new inflation data over the next two days.

Back home, Thong said the FBM KLCI managed to end in positive territory following a choppy session.

"We noticed market undertones remain rather cautious as daily volume trades have dipped to below the 5bn shares level over the last few days. "Nonetheless, we expect trading activities to improve, taking cue from the robust gains on Wall Street thus see the index to hover between the 1,620-1,630 range today," he told the Business Times. Among actives, Techbase Industries Bhd rose 0.5 sen to 22 sen, Powerwell Holdings Bhd added 0.5 sen to 57 sen and Aimflex Bhd gained 0.5 sen to 20.5 sen.Ends
