JOHOR BARU: A man was arrested just one day after allegedly breaking into a house in Taman Nesa, Skudai, and stealing an air conditioner.
The theft, which was captured on security camera, went viral after the homeowner shared the footage on social media.
The two-minute, 20-second video showed the suspect repeatedly striking a gate until it opened, then stealing the air conditioning unit.
He was also seen returning to the house moments later to steal the outdoor unit.
Johor Bahru Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said they received a report from a 40-year-old woman at 12.18pm on Friday.
"Acting on the information, a team from the Johor Baru Utara Criminal Investigation Division arrested the 32-year-old suspect, a local man at 2.30pm the following day," he said in a statement today.
He said checks revealed that the suspect had one past criminal record. "However, a urine test carried out on the suspect showed that he was not on any drugs," he said.
Balveer Singh said the suspect has been remanded for four days, starting today until Dec 31, to facilitate police investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
The police urged anyone with additional information on the case to come forward.
