Gamuda, partner Alstom bag RM5bil train signalling system job in Perth

KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd's joint venture with French rail engineer Alstom SA in Australia has bagged a A$1.6 billion (RM5 billion) contract to modernise Perth's train signalling system.

In a statement today, the construction company said the 10-year Western Australia high-capacity signalling contract was awarded by Public Transport Authority of Western Australia.

The contract consists of the design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of a new automatic train control system to replace the existing PTA signalling and train control systems.

Gamuda said the project will be delivered in multiple line-by-line stages to minimise disruption to train operators.

"The world's largest signalling project by route length reinforces Gamuda's strategic position in Australia and showcases its capability to deliver large-scale, transformative infrastructure solutions," it said

In the joint venture, Gamuda's wholly-owned DT Infrastructure Pty Ltd has a 46 per cent stake while Alstrom's unit Alstom Transport Australia Pty Ltd has the remaining 54 per cent.

"Upon completion, the project will enable 40 per cent increase in network capacity, energy saving benefits, leading cybersecurity and future proofing of network for growth with minimum disruption to commuters," it said.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Gamuda expects the project to contribute to revenue and earnings for the year ending July 31, 2025.

It estimated a revenue of up to A$737 million (RM2.3 billion) from the project.

DT Infrastructure was established in June 2023 following Gamuda's acquisition of Downer EDI's Australian transport projects business.

The company brings extensive expertise across multiple sectors, such as defence, transport (rail, roads and bridges), and infrastructure (power, renewables and water).

Specialising in rail systems and digital engineering, as well as intelligent transport solutions, DT Infrastructure has almost 50 project wins to date, reflecting its commitment to innovative technology and strong client relationships.

Meanwhile, Alstom Transport has been operating in Australia for more than 100 years and involved in several significant rail projects across Australia.

They included Sydney Metro, Melbourne's high capacity metro trains, Queensland's new generation rollingstock and Adelaide's electrification and rolling stock.
