Sabah will only recognise competency certificates from its own energy commission from January 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah will only recognise electricity and solar photovoltaics (PV) competency certificates issued by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) for registration matters from January 2025.

EcoS in a statement today said all holders of existing competency certificates, whether issued by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (ST) and/or Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), will have to apply for an equivalent certification from ECoS after attending and passing the electricity Supply Enactment (EBE) 2024 Module Course and Electricity Supply Regulations (PPBE) 2024.

The Electricity Supply Enactment 2024 and Regulation 60 in the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 states that ECoS took over the regulatory power of electricity supply activities from the Energy Commission of Malaysia since Jan 3, 2024.

ECoS chief executive officer, Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid in a statement said the conditions provided under the Electricity Supply Regulations 2024 clearly states that a person applying to become an ECoS "competent person" must have sufficient knowledge of the Enactment and its Regulations.

He recommended that holders of ST or SEDA Competency Certificates reach out directly to any of the 16 ECoS-accredited training centres for additional information.
