MMHE bags Uzma drilling mobile unit conversion works contract

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd (MMHE) has secured a subcontract award from Uzma Bhd's unit Uzma Engineering Sdn Bhd (UESB) for the conversion works of a mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) into a mobile water injection facility (WIF).

Upon completion, this facility will be deployed offshore Sabah by 2025 to support enhanced oil recovery efforts, contributing to increased production efficiency in the region.

During its conversion at MMHE West Yard in Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia, the MODU will be equipped with Uzma's Mobile Water Injection Facilities (uzmaWIF), a solution for efficient and sustainable water management in oil and gas operations.

This system is designed to optimise reservoir pressure, enhance oil recovery rates, and reduce environmental impact.  The conversion into a mobile WIF will be MMHE's first floater conversion project for UESB.

Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Bhd (MHB) managing director and chief executive officer Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor said the conversion of the MODU into a mobile WIF highlights MHB's expertise in complex heavy engineering, marine repair and conversion projects, reaffirming our commitment to enhancing asset performance within the industry.

"This achievement reflects our capability and commitment to supporting Malaysia's energy sector, and we look forward to establishing a strong, long-term partnership with Uzma."

"This project marks a major milestone for MHB, showcasing our partnership with key industry players in bolstering Malaysia's energy sector.  "With over 30 major conversion projects successfully completed to date, MHB is well-equipped to deliver this conversion with excellence," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Uzma group chief executive officer Datuk Kamarul Redzuan Muhamed said the group is pleased to be working with MHB on the conversion of its second WIF, which is scheduled for deployment in East Malaysia by mid-2025.

He added that Uzma pioneered the deployment of our mobile WIF solution in 2016 and it remains in operation today for its client.

"Our WIF solution has been proven to increase hydrocarbon production as well as maintain pressure to extend the oil field life cycle," he said.
