SPAN to come up with strategic plan for governance in water services industry

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) said it will collaborate with experts to develop a specific strategic plan related to governance and anti-corruption in the water services industry.

SPAN, in a statement said the plan will be developed through an appropriate approach to examine the best practices, systems, or procedures to ensure that the industry is free from corruption, abuse of power, and misappropriation.

"It is expected to ensure the best governance practices among water service industry players, focusing on transparent and open procurement processes and strengthening the regulation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs conducted by licence holders," the commission said.

As the regulatory authority for the national water services industry under the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (Act 655), SPAN said it upholds a strict "Zero Tolerance" policy against corruption and misuse of power in the water sector.

"SPAN remains committed and has implemented various initiatives towards fair and transparent regulation based on the provisions of Act 655, integrity standards, and best ethical practices," it added.
