KUALA LUMPUR: The Digital Ministry has suggested establishing a Digital Trust and Data Safety Commission in the first half of 2025 (1H25).
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the commission will oversee the development of a safe, secure, and trusted data ecosystem that fosters productive data flows.
"In this way, we hope to lay a robust foundation for the responsible and productive use of technology—both now and in the future," he said in his speech at the launch of Malaysia Digital Xceleration (MDX) Summit 2024.
Gobind mentioned that discussions are underway with certain industry players, and their plan is to initially establish a pro tem data committee.
He said this committee will suggest a framework for how to structure the commission going forward.
"It is a work in progress, and hopefully, within the next three months, by the end of the year, we will receive input on how this should be structured.
"Once that's done, we will prepare a cabinet paper, present the suggestions to the cabinet, and gather feedback from other ministries. As I mentioned, we aim to make an announcement by the first half of next year," Gobind told reporters at the press conference.
On the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO), Gobind said it will be launched in mid-December.
"We will give all the details on the date of the announcement itself. But at this point in time, a lot of work is being done.
"We have been very transparent about the process. We have advertised certain key positions in the agency, and a lot of interest has been shown.
"The question is how it is going to be structured, and we are working with that," he added.
Gobind mentioned that they are also exploring partnerships with other countries to collaborate on knowledge sharing.
