PTP carries out first methanol bunkering operation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between MMC Group and APM Terminals, has successfully carried out its first methanol bunkering operation, fueling Maersk's dual-fuel container vessel, the Antonia Maersk.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for PTP, positioning it as a leader in adopting alternative marine fuels and demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and innovation in maritime logistics.

PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh expressed pride in this achievement, calling it a pivotal step in the port's journey to becoming a leading regional hub. 

"This successful methanol bunkering operation demonstrates PTP's readiness to handle alternative marine fuels and paves the way for future trials of diverse and emerging fuel solutions," he said.

The Antonia Maersk, part of Maersk's fleet of 18 large dual-fuel vessels, is designed to run on methanol, significantly reducing emissions and advancing the shipping giant's decarbonisation goals.

PTP CEO Mark Hardiman emphasised the collaborative effort among PTP, Maersk, and Malaysian authorities. "Together, we conducted rigorous safety procedures through comprehensive operational assessments, ensuring the success of this landmark operation."

"This development reinforces PTP's dedication to safety, customer satisfaction, and terminal efficiency," he stated.

In addition to this achievement, PTP has been recognised for its operational excellence, maintaining a record of handling over one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per month for six consecutive months in 2024. 

On September 22, the port set a new record with 14,036 quayside moves within a 12-hour shift.

PTP's global standing continues to rise, earning the title of the fifth most efficient container port worldwide in the 2023 Container Port Performance Index by The World Bank and S&P Global, and it currently ranks 15th globally in volume throughput.
