KUALA LUMPUR: People from all walks of life gathered in solemn tribute to bid farewell to the late business tycoon T. Ananda Krishnan, one of Malaysia's most respected business magnates and philanthropists.
Crowds began forming outside the late Krishnan's residence at Jalan Berhala, Brickfields here as early as 2pm, queuing patiently to pay their final respects.
The turnout reflected the profound impact Ananda had on the nation through his visionary leadership and charitable contributions.
Priority was given to the elderly, who were allowed to bypass the queue to enter the wake.
However, in a gesture of humility and respect for privacy, the media was not permitted inside the premises, following a request from Ananda's family.
Each mourner was allocated a few moments to view the body and convey their final respects, ensuring everyone had an opportunity to participate in the sombre occasion.
The family had also made a heartfelt appeal for visitors to refrain from bringing flowers or gifts, keeping the farewell simple and focused on remembrance.
"I waited about 15 minutes. We went through the queues and checks to pay our last respects. It's a small effort for the chance to have one final glimpse of someone we admired so much," one mourner told Business Times.
"I got here five hours ago, took the bus, and came by myself. His contributions to the country were immense. Being here today is the least we can do to honour his legacy," another mourner said.
Often referred to as "AK," the 86-year-old was one of Malaysia's wealthiest individuals, with a net worth once estimated at over US$5 billion.
Known for his low-profile demeanour, Ananda built a diversified empire encompassing telecommunications, media, and energy through his company, Usaha Tegas.
Despite his business acumen, Ananda remained deeply committed to philanthropy.
Through the Yayasan Ananda Krishnan foundation, he contributed significantly to education, arts, sports, and humanitarian initiatives.
His charitable activities have provided scholarships and support to countless individuals, reflecting his dedication to uplifting society.
