Retail sector expects strong Q1 but tough 2025 overall

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's retail sector may post strong performance in the first quarter of 2025, an industry body said.

But things will get tough thereafter especially in the third quarter, according to Malaysia Retail Association (MRA).

MRA deputy president Dr Kasuma Satria said the expected strong sales in the first quarter would be driven by high demand during key events.

This includes Chinese New Year and Ramadan fasting month, followed by the Hari Raya celebrations.

However, the sector will face considerable challenges after that, particularly in the third quarter, he said at an event aimed at providing aid to flood victims in the east coast states here today.

He added that the third quarter traditionally features the lowest retail activity nationwide.

Hence, MRA appealed for government assistance to support the sector during the trying times.

MRA president Datuk Andrew Lim Tatt Keong called on the government to provide targeted stimulus measures, such as launching a "Visit Malaysia" programme or introducing tax reductions, in order to sustain activities within the sector.

Kasuma highlighted the critical role that the retail industry plays in the broader economy, particularly in terms of employment and its impact on businesses across the nation.

MRA is also calling for partnerships to ensure the sector's continued growth and resilience.
