MoF to announce list of luxury vehicles that will not qualify for targeted diesel subsidy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) will soon announce the list of luxury vehicles which will not qualify for targeted diesel subsides.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said this will be the next step in the government's move to remove blanket diesel subsides and replace them with targeted subsidies.

He clarified that even if a vehicle is classified as luxury, if its older than 10 years, it may still fall into the same category.

"The dates (of implementation) and prices will be announced later. We need time to avoid speculation that could lead to hoarding or sudden price increases," Amir Hamzah told reporters on the sidelines of the International Social Wellbeing Conference 2024.

On May 21, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the cabinet agreed to implement targeted diesel subsidy involving consumers in Peninsular Malaysia.

On May 27, the Finance Ministry announced a diesel subsidy aid programme involving a monthly allocation of RM200 for eligible individuals and smallholders in agriculture and commodity sectors.
