MITI starts anti-dumping duty probe on PET plastic from Indonesia, China

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has started an anti-dumping duty probe on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) originating from China and Indonesia, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

In a statement today, the ministry said the probe was the result of a petition it received from a domestic producer, Recron (M) Sdn Bhd for an anti-dumping duty investigation on imports of PET originating or exported from China and Indonesia.

The petitioner alleged that imports of the PET originating from China and Indonesia were sold at a price much lower than their domestic selling price in China and Indonesia.

Recron further claimed that dumped imports from China and Indonesia have increased in terms of absolute quantity and have caused material injuries to the petitioner.

MITI said that the government has assessed and considered the information and evidence of dumping, injury and causal link set out in the petition.

It said a preliminary determination will be made within 120 days from the date of initiation.

"If the preliminary determination is affirmative, the government will impose a provisional anti-dumping duty at the rate that is necessary to prevent further injury to the domestic industry," the ministry said in a statement today.

Additionally, MITI will distribute a set of questionnaire and relevant documents to interested parties such as domestic producers, foreign exporters/producers of the subject merchandise in china andIndonesia, importers as well as the government of China dan Indonesia.

Other interested parties who wish to participate in the anti-dumping duty investigation may request for the questionnaires in writing to MITI no later than Aug 23, 2024.
