Perodua: 2019 marks highest sales on record, new turbo SUV for 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua ended 2019 with a high note, beaten its previous annual sales record of 227,243 units in 2018 with 240,341 vehicles sold in 2019.

The figure constitutes a year-on-year jump of 13,098 units (+5.8 per cent) and is the highest annual sales figure ever for the company.

“This achievement truly surpassed our expectations and we sincerely thank all Malaysians for the strong support.

“We are setting a 2020 sales target of 240,000 units and are cautiously optimistic that it is attainable despite a more competitive market this year,” Perodua president and chief executive officer, Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

In terms of models’ sales figures, each of them are propelled by strong demands – in ascending order, the Alza, Aruz, Bezza, Axia and Myvi as the best-seller.

Perodua said each of their models led its respective segment sin 2019, including the Perodua Aruz, which closed the year as Malaysia’s best-selling SUV with 30,115 units sold.

To date, over 2,000 units of the 2020 Perodua Bezza, launched two weeks ago, have been delivered out of an order tally of 15,000, which include 8,000 converted orders for the previous model.

Perodua also expects to boost production by 4 per cent to 254,000 units from 2019’s 244,400 units, including production for export and to stock up for 2021.

Perodua 2020 SUV to get 1.0-litre turbo engine

On another note, Perodua has confirmed that their highly-anticipated SUV (sports utility vehicle) coded as the D55L will bear the 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The B-segment car will be based on the 2020 Daihatsu Rocky that has been on sale in Japan beginning December last year, and to be built on the brand’s Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform.

The Perodua D55L’s engine is good for 96hp and 140Nm of torque, and will be mated to a Direct-Shift CVT transmission.

The car is most-likely to be a front-wheel driven, although the usage of Kembara name is yet to be confirmed.
