WE'RE all in need of a printer for printing our documents these days, and probably one for the house, especially if you're too lazy to do so in your office.
Thankfully, Canon aims to shoo off your sorrows with its expansion to the Maxify Ink Efficient GX Series lineup, the Maxify GX7070 which includes a refillable ink tank for booming productivity.
It is said to have large ink tanks and high-volume ink bottles that'll save you up for generations, let's see if they spoke of the truth.
DESIGN
When it arrived at my doorstep, I thought I'd break my back attempting to carry it to my desk. I almost did by the way.
Not much has changed with the design. The printer has a sturdy build that looks strikingly similar to its counterparts, like the GX7050 and GX7020.
There's a 2.7-inch touchscreen that helps you operate the printer seamlessly but you need Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and fax to use it well.
Furthermore, there are two paper trays that can keep up to 600 sheets of A4 paper, a black tank on the right side of the printer with three other inks (cyan, magenta, and yellow) on the other side.
With the viewing window, you can easily see how much ink you have left before refilling it for the next batch and the same rules apply to the windows for the paper trays too.
Moreover, there are also Ethernet and USB ports with a USB Type-A port at the front.
Thanks to the size of the ink tanks and ink bottles, it keeps a low printing cost without tempering its quality.
It also has an economy mode that helps save more too and it can also print on various print surfaces. This explains the features that are in the app, which we will talk about later.
PERFORMANCE
As a four-in-one printer, the Maxify GX7070 can print, scan, and copy in addition to an auto-duplex mode and duplex scan.
Now, I can automatically copy both sides of my documents and scan directly to email, USB stick, or Cloud too.
It has a print speed of approximately 24 ipm (Impressions Per Minute) and 15.5 ipm for colour with the FPOT (first page out) at only 7 seconds.
Of course, printing out pictures with normal paper lacks lustre as opposed to glossy papers, but the printing quality is quite decent.
The results are nice for coloured prints, but they're a tad grainy and seem dull. Although it's not impressively accurate to the pictures on my phone, the printer caters better to documents and texts than making gift cards or colourful wrapping papers.
Then again, it's a printer for office use, not pictures. And it didn't take too long to print out several documents too if done correctly.
Also, it reduces scanning time thanks to the 2-sided Auto Document Feeder (DADF) and can scan double-sided documents in a single paper pass.
Based on my testing, photocopy speeds took 12 seconds per page.
The printer has a reception memory of 250 pages and it can do Automatic Coded Speed Dialing up to 100 locations, with Automatic Group Dialing up to 99 locations.
CANON PRINT APP
Of course, the printer is not operable without its free Canon PRINT App (also known as Creative Park) that you can download on both Android and iOS devices.
Using the app is quite easy. Not only I could print, copy, scan remotely and check on my printer, I was also able to print out all sorts of materials for other usages too.
Since I could print with varying print surfaces like labels, glossy paper, banners, etc, I could also experiment with a favourite printing option of mine under 'Animals' where it would print out my favourite pets for me to make origami out of. Including mythical creatures too.
Besides that, I could also print out a wrapping paper print that saves me from running to the store and getting one myself.
All I need is a Wi-Fi connection and I can connect from tablets and smartphones. And I could also print documents, photos, and web pages or scan and store images in cloud storage.
This makes printing more fun.
VERDICT
Given its hefty ink bottle, not only does it cleanly fill up the ink, but it can save a lot in the long run.
Once the tank becomes full, the bottle will automatically stop injecting the ink while reducing refill mistakes thanks to its nozzles and receptacles.
Although it's not stupendously the best printer out there, it served me well for the most part and is affordable for my budget.
The Canon Maxify GX7070 is priced at RM2,699.
