KUALA LUMPUR: No more Lightning port for Apple devices as the EU dictated a new ruling for smartphones to switch to USB Type-C charging port.
The iPhone maker has confirmed that they will be migrating to the new USB-C on their products.
The announcement was made by Apple's worldwide Marketing senior vice president, Greg Joswiak, during the Wall Street Journal's Tech Live Event today, confirming that they're tapping out from the traditional port to the new one.
"We've been in an argument over this one for over ten years, and over ten years ago, the push from the EU, although they were well-meaning, was to do Micro USB and standardised it. If we have standardised Micro USB, neither of those would've happened," Joswiak said.
"Over a billion people, that's not a small number of people, have the connector on the left (Lightning cable) to be able to use what they have already and not be disrupted. It causes a bunch of e-waste as well," he added.
Alas, Apple has to comply with the government albeit thinking that the approach would be better environmentally and for their customers to not have a government to be that prescriptive.
Furthermore, the ruling applies to earbuds, so we'll be seeing Apple creating AirPods with USB Type-C ports soon.
