Veteran actor Azmil Mustapha admitted to hospital

KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning veteran actor Azmil Mustapha was admitted to hospital yesterday afternoon after suffering from shortness of breath.

In an audio statement by his younger brother Aziph Mustapha, the 64-year-old actor was at a meeting with friends in the morning when he suddenly felt very tired.

“His friend took him to the hospital where he was treated in the emergency room at about 12.30pm before being transferred to the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) in the evening.

In a WhatsApp message to a friend yesterday, Aziph wrote: “Dear all please make Du’a for my brother. He is having difficulty breathing and can’t clear the liquid in his lungs. His heart is not functioning well.”

Fortunately, in the rest of the minute-long audio message, Aziph said that Azmil was feeling much better today even though he was still being treated in the CCU.

“He’s on medication and needs some room to recover, so we thank all Malaysians for praying for his health. But we also request some privacy so that he can recuperate in peace,” said Aziph.

It was reported that Azmil underwent a coronary bypass surgery in Syria in 2010 and has since been going for routine periodic checkups at a local hospital. Early last year, Azmil was admitted to the hospital’s CCU but had subsequently recovered.

A popular actor in the 1980s, Azmil had starred in a number of box-office hits such as Mekanik (1983), Ali Setan (1985), Ali Setan 2 (1986) and Suara Kekasih (1986).

In 1986, he took home Best Actor award for his role in Ali Setan at the 6th Malaysian Film Festival.
