Mira speaks her mind

OF late, a string of celebrities have used their platforms to make their views known about the nation’s current affairs, creating a buzz on social media.

Since the topic of whether celebrities should get involved in current issues like politics is an ongoing debate, the New Straits Times reached out to actress Mira Filzah to see what she has to say with regards to the issue.

“It’s not wrong to be vocal about current issues. But it depends on how sensitive the issue is at a certain moment.

“If the matter in question is sensitive, it’s best to keep quiet.

“But, if a celebrity wishes to voice his opinion, then it must be of substance and backed up by facts. One should not voice out something just for the sake of doing it.

“Social media gives us the freedom to share our opinions but we must be careful when choosing to do so because Netizens are quick to respond and criticise,” said Mira at Sri Pentas TV3, where she was introduced as the new face of TV3’s long-running magazine show, Nona.

Asked if she chooses to stay away from being vocal on social media, Mira said: “It depends on the topic. If I feel the need to be vocal on a pressing matter, and if I am confident enough to engage in a discussion, then I wouldn’t hesitate.”

As a celebrity and the new host of Nona, Mira added that she acknowledged the need to keep herself informed on the latest news, issues and happenings.

“Even though I will be helming a show targeted at women, it does not only centre on beauty, fashion and lifestyle topics but stretches way beyond that. So I have to ensure that I read a lot.”
