#Showbiz: Plenty acting offers, but money isn't everything, says Maya Karin

KUALA LUMPUR: Her last silver screen appearance was three years ago and popular actress Maya Karin is not too concerned about being away from the limelight.

Her last movie outings were for Nota (directed by Yasu Tanaka) and Jwanita (Osman Ali) in 2015.

“I did get many offers in the past four years or so, but I found that the roles weren’t ‘speaking’ to me,” said the 38-year-old actress in a recent news report.

The artiste who is of mixed German-Malay parentage said she would rather wait it out for the right role and script to come along.

“Earlier in my acting career, I had played roles which weren’t suitable for me and I had learnt my lesson then that I should have been more selective so that my credibility as an actress is not questioned.

And money, she said, was never a deciding factor when it came to accepting roles.

Maya who made it big after playing a vampire in Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba’s Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam in 2004 said: “There’s no point of earning so much when you know the script and role are simply not to your liking.

“While they may not be suitable for me, they could be perfect for others.

When Munafik 2 offer came, Maya knew it was her calling.

She agreed to star in the Skop Productions’ film, scheduled to open in cinemas on Aug 30.

Maya plays Sakinah, a character she deemed as extraordinary.

“I was also surprised to find out that the script had been tweaked a little after I said yes to the offer. There was even a rape scene added,” said Maya who only received the finalised script three days before filming began.

Others in the cast include Nasir Bilal Khan, Mawi, Datuk Rahim Razali, Datuk Fizz Fairuz, Fauzi Nawawi, Ku Faridah and Syamsul Yusof who is also the film’s director.

Maya is also starring in the yet-to-be-screened Olympic Dream. Directed by Don Hoe, the film in Mandarin tells the journey of a young badminton player who achieved her dream of winning an Olympic gold.
