#Showbiz: K-Pop fans calling for boycott on BigBang and YG?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Burning Sun Club in Seoul owned by Seungri of K-Pop group BigBang, has been charting up some unwanted heat lately.

According to Koreaboo, a customer was alleged to have been physically assaulted recently by the club’s CEO, identified as Mr Jang.

When the victim called for the police, he was apparently arrested by supposedly corrupt officers of the law and beaten up further.

Another point of contention came in the form of video footage that showed a heavily intoxicated woman being brazenly dragged out by security guards as employees just passively stood by and ignored her.

When Netizens found out that Seungri was actually present in his club in the Gangnam district, during these incidents, they expressed their disappointment at him online for being linked to such scandals.

Some have even taken on a proactive approach to boycott BigBang and its agency, YG Entertainment.

The general consensus was that the agency and its artistes should learn from their mistakes and not be shielded by the fans in order to change for the better.

One long post going around read: “Don’t buy YG products. I’m thinking a lot after Seungri’s controversy. I just deleted and threw away all the YG songs and albums that I bought for BLACKPINK and BIGBANG. Let’s boycott it. So that money doesn’t become a source of authority.”

“If we continue to buy their songs and content, YG will think the public are fools. They’ll think that time will heal, it will be okay once they go and return from the army, if we send out good songs we’ll make money. Other entertainment agencies will see it and think, ‘Oh? The other agency was able to cover up anything they did as long as they had money?’”

“If you really love BIGBANG and YG artistes, shouldn’t you reprimand them instead of shielding them? So they can walk a better path.”

The Netizen then wrote: “I realise how this one situation probably happens much more often than we realise, and I was shocked. Please don’t think that ‘This has nothing to do with me. As long as I’m fine.’ Everything that happens in society will affect you in some way, some time.

“Those of you who complain about being born in high class or low class, please understand, that way of thinking was born from these kinds of people who think money is power.”

Apparently, YG Entertainment has made the news multiple times for illegal activities over the years, with many of its artistes, such as T.O.P, Park Bom, Kush and G-Dragon, accused of using illegal drugs.

Fans of BigBang in particular had also aired their frustrations with Seungri on his recent scandal and claimed that the members were too “problematic”. Many also declared that they would no longer be supporting the K-Pop group.

In what seems to be a domino effect, fans of other YG artistes, including Winner, iKon, BlackPink and more, have called for them to leave the agency in order to not be associated with the negative controversies plaguing the company.

However, YG Entertainment and Seungri have kept mum on the matter. YG recently released a very brief statement that read: “We will not make any announcements about it.”
