KUALA LUMPUR: Nur 2’s director and scriptwriter Shahrulezad Mohammedin admits he made a mistake by showing police charging the female antagonist with rape.
While he accepted Nor Zabetha’s feedback about the final episode of Nur 2 where Juita was charged with raping the protagonist Ustaz Adam, he however said that women do get charged with raping men in the West and believed Malaysian laws should change with the times to reflect reality.
“Nor Zabetha knows the law and she is right. I’ve read about Malaysian law on rape and I feel it is time for it to be updated to suit the times,” said Shahrulezad.
“Perhaps in Nur 3 Juita will see her charge dropped and Ustaz Adam will appeal against the court’s decision.
“It’s not my intention to challenge the law but many women do get charged with raping men today and I believe Malaysia will keep up with the times and make changes to the law.
“Who knows, this will become a reality thanks to Ustaz Adam!”
Shahrulezad admitted that the scene where policemen told Juita that they were charging her with raping Ustaz Adam was something he overlooked.
“I admit it was a small error in the script here. The policemen should have said you are under arrest, Juita, that’s all.”
Last Friday, lawyer Nor Zabetha commented via Facebook that there had not been a case in Malaysia where a woman had been charged for rape, except in the popular drama series which ended last Thursday.
In the final episode Juita played by Azar Azmi got charged with “raping” Ustaz Adam, played by Syafiq Kyle.
Nor Zabetha said it was absurd for Juita to be charged with raping Ustaz Adam.
She added that Section 375 of the Penal Code says men commit rape against women, not vice-versa.
The lawyer also said that the producers of Nur 2 should have made the police enlighten Ustaz Adam about the law when he made a report about “getting raped”.
She also called on Malaysians, especially drama producers, filmmakers and actors to wisen up to the law in order to make their films and dramas credible.
Nur 2, with 15 episodes, is the sequel to the popular drama series Nur, screened on TV3 last year.
Produced by Radius One, it continues the story of Ustaz Adam and his wife Nur (Amyra Rosli), who was formerly a prostitute.
The couple run a religious school for youngsters which is popular in their village, and Nur soon befriends the mysterious Juita, who is also a prostitute.
Juita is obssessed with Ustaz Adam and her friendship with Nur is actually a tactic to get close to him.
