#Showbiz: Msian screenwriter behind upcoming Disney animated feature

KUALA LUMPUR: After the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Malaysian producer-screenwriter Adele Lim is set to put out her first Disney-animated feature film.

Entertainment portal Hype reported yesterday that the Petaling Jaya-born Lim had been recruited for Raya And The Last Dragon, a fantasy and adventure film set in Southeast Asia about a brave teenage warrior who goes in search of the last known dragon in her home country.

Lim, whose big screen debut was 2018's Crazy Rich Asians starring Henry Golding and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh, joined the crew of Raya And The Last Dragon in August last year.

The animated film was supposed to premiere on Nov 25 but it has since been pushed to March 12 next year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Walt Disney Animation Studios, it is directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins.

Raya And The Last Dragon tells the story of a girl from the fictitious land of Kumandra, who is on a mission to search for the last dragon named Sisu to save her realm from danger.

Raya is voiced by Canadian actress and singer-songwriter Cassie Steele, while the water dragon Sisu is voiced by American singer-actress Nora Lum or Awkwafina, of Crazy Rich Asians.

Lim, who had her early education in Sekolah Menengah (Perempuan) Sri Aman, Petaling Jaya, is a film graduate from Emerson College in Boston, the United States.

She started her Hollywood career in 2000, writing and later producing for TV series as Xena: Warrior Princess, One Tree Hill and Private Practice.
