#Showbiz: Namewee angers BlackPink fans over vulgar lyrics in new song

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial hip hop artiste Namewee's latest song, You Know Who Is My Father, has drawn the ire of fans of international K-Pop group BlackPink.

The music video for the Manglish track which premiered last week on his YouTube channel features a vulgar lyric used in combination with the name of the popular girl group.

It also references BlackPink's hit tune How You Like That during that particular segment.

According to Koreaboo, fans of the group known as Blinks found the lyric sung in Mandarin insulting as it sexualises BlackPink.

Fans have been taking to social media to voice their displeasure and to report the video on YouTube.

Others have been calling on BlackPink's agency YG Entertainment to look into the matter.

Although the translation for the lyrics can be seen onscreen in the music video, the vulgar lyric has since been pixelated. But the audio portion has not been censored.

However, the 38-year-old rapper and filmmaker whose real name is Wee Meng Chee hit back by further antagonising the fans via social media.

"It's been a while since I've gotten attacked by so many people over a song I wrote. My opponents this time are BlackPink's fans. I want to say, thank you for the views," he wrote in one of his Facebook posts.

Another read: "I've been getting spammed and attacked by BlackPink fans for the past two days, and there are no signs of them stopping yet. Even their agency came out and encouraged fans to do this."

Namewee later uploaded a lyric version of the song, which is believed to be a collaboration with online casino me88.

He added that the fans had failed to understand the meaning of the song that features English, Mandarin and Malay lyrics.

"I can only say that these international fans have very good teamwork and the ability to round up many people. It's too bad that they don't even understand what this song is trying to convey.

"It's actually understandable, because they can get so hyped up while listening to K-Pop without knowing any Korean… just like how I don't understand Japanese, but I get so hyped up when I watch their porn films.

"Here's the lyric version, let's see how many people will come and attack me! Thank you for giving me views," he wrote.

The music video for You Know Who Is My Father has since garnered over 3.8 million views on YouTube with 27,000 likes and 58,000 dislikes.

So far, Namewee has not issued any apology and YG Entertainment has not released any official statement on the matter.
