#Showbiz: 'Crazy Rich Asians' sequel is coming, with new screenwriter

KUALA LUMPUR: A sequel is underway for the hugely successful romantic comedy of 2018, Crazy Rich Asians.

This time around, a new screenwriter is coming on board and she is Amy Wang.

United States entertainment website Deadline reported yesterday that Wang, a Chinese-Australian, will be the sole writer for the sequel which is also directed by Jon M. Chu.

The sequel is also based on a book by Singapore-born American writer Kevin Kwan, who wrote the best-selling trilogy Crazy Rich Asians (2013), China Rich Girlfriend (2015) and Rich People Problems (2017).

The main stars of the first film Henry Golding and Constance Wu are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, although the plot is still under wraps.

The first film collected more than US$238 million (RM1,005 million) and became the most successful romantic comedy of the 2010s.

Wang has worked on Netflix shows From Scratch and The Brothers Sun, which will begin filming in May, and has won a Cannes Lion award for her short film Unnatural in 2018.

Her appointment comes after a pay dispute which made the two original writers, Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli leave the film project.

Earlier this month, Golding told E! News that he was looking forward to the sequel.

"I know they're working on it, but hopefully sooner than later," he said.
